On May 18th, I had the pleasure of participating in a Garden Tour day in Sharon, CT. Organized by one of our Decorator's Club members, Debra Blair, I had no idea what to expect and what a fantastic day it was.
We started out at “Trade Secrets,” an annual antique and garden show, followed by lunch on the patio at the home of Debra Blair, who graciously hosted our group at her incredible 1929 Georgian mansion. This woman not only has her own trade secrets as her house is divinely decorated, she also knows how to entertain in style.
We then drove to Bunny Williams and John Roselli’s incredible home a few miles away. Bunny regaled us with the incredible history of their home and gardens for almost two hours. The property and outbuildings were breathtaking, and the interiors were an eclectic mix of old and new, magically juxtaposed with Bunny’s inimitable style.
They certainly know how to entertain in style in every season. The pool house she had built from old logs on the property, recalls an ancient Greek temple. The pool surround was fabricated from old limestone found in France. The house has the most incredible gardens and Bunny’s head gardener joined us for the tour and was able to answer all of our questions about some of the unusual and exotic plantings. Bunny has been busy creating a woods garden that actually appears as if it has been there for years. Fascinating. Of course, they have a full-time staff that tends to the plants, flowers, vegetable garden, Koi pond and shrubs, and John walked in carrying freshly picked morel mushrooms to use for the dinner he was going to cook for their house guests.
I was also in love with the chicken coop. The chickens were so beautiful and the coop was architecturally interesting, harmonizing with the barn and the house.
While Bunny and John have spent their lives in design and are consummate entertainers, you too can host an incredible outdoor soiree.
I recently became a member of the Southern Living Design Trust. Our southern friends are masters at outdoor entertaining and I wanted to share some of their insight. Click here to read all of their top tips.
